Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday in Sokoto, Sokoto State said leadership meant nothing if it did not meet the yearnings and aspirations of the led.
Obasanjo, who said this when he inaugurated the 80 million litres Asari water treatment plant constructed by the Sokoto State Government, added that the nation’s leaders should satisfy the expectations of the citizenry.
According to the former president, a leader is a leader, but a good leader must live up to the expectations of the people he is leading in all forms.
He said at the inauguration of the project built at the cost of N2.6 billion: “God ordained leaders for nothing but to satisfy the needs of their followers and subjects.
“We all have to imbibe this.”
Obasanjo appealed to the citizenry to pray fervently for themselves, the nation and their leaders, adding: “If we have good leaders without good followers, the equation is not balanced and vice versa.”
Obasanjo also prayed God to give Nigeria leaders that she deserved, particularly when the country was facing various challenges.
He said: “We need leaders who will live up to the duties and responsibilities which God has put on their shoulders.”
Also speaking, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, commended the state government for executing the project.
Abubakar also called for the routine maintenance of the project and condemned lack of maintenance culture in the country.
The sultan said that the most important role of any leader was to impact positively on his followers, adding: “Governor Aliyu Wamakko has been doing just that.”
He also prayed for lasting peace in the nation, stressing that nothing in the world was beyond God’s intervention.
Wamakko said the project was a dream come true for his six year-old administration.
The governor said water supply had steadily improved under his administration “from nine million gallons per day in 2007 to 52 million gallons, per day now.
“No living creature can survive without water and we have succeeded in providing water to all the people of the state, including areas like Gada, Dange , Achida and Rafin Duma, among others.”
Alhaji Dalhatu Tangaza, the Sokoto State Commissioner for Water Resources, said government had concluded plans to rehabilitate the Impresit Water Treatment Plant in Sokoto to provide additional 20 million gallons of water per day.
