Organised labour on Friday shut the Thisday newspaper over unpaid salaries.
It was learnt that the office of Thisday, located at Apapa, Lagos was shut as early as 8am by the National Union of Paper, Publishing Practitioners Workers of Nigeria.
The union said it took the decision owing to the failure of the company’s management to pay its staff about eight months salary.
Sources told The Eagle Online that though the company paid some categories of workers two months salary earlier this week, NUPPROW said it wasn’t impressed with the step.
It said there should be no discrimination in the payment of salary as all staff should be paid as and when due.
It was gathered that the national leadership of NUPPROW, which carried out the enforcement of the close down order, was in a meeting with the Publisher and Chairman of the company, Nduka Obaigbena, on the matter as at press time.
The union was said to be insisting on Obaigbena signing a fresh condition of service with the workers and full payment of the eight months salary arrears before the company can be reopened.
It was learnt that no worker has been allowed into the company today.
