Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State has described late Senator Dahiru Awaisu Kuta as one of the pillars of the current democratic dispensation in Nigeria.
Aliyu said this on Tuesday on the floor of the Niger State House of Assembly during a Special Valedictory session in honour of the late senator, who was a one time member of the Assembly.
Aliyu stated that the story of the current democratic dispensation cannot be written without a prominent space given to the late Kuta, whom he said risked everything in promoting the G-34 group, which metamorphosed into the Peoples Democratic Party in 1998.
He said: “He contributed a lot in the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria for his steadfast commitments and patriotism to the nation.”
The governor explained that despite efforts by political jobbers to come between him and Senator Kuta, they were able to resolve their differences before his death.
He said: “Our brother and friend, late Senator Kuta was a pillar in this democracy and will be greatly missed.”
He disclosed that the state government will do all within its powers to preserve the legacies of the late senator and ensure that the family he left behind is well catered for.
Aliyu said: “I was one of his few confidants.
“We related very well and for now all we can do for him is to pray for the repose of his soul.”
In his tribute, the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Hon. Adamu Usman, described late Kuta as a grass root politician, who knows the heartbeat of his people.
Usman advised the state government to immortalize the late senator, adding that the state was privileged to have his kind in their midst.
He said: “In life, your image was large, but in death your life and times illuminates extensive horizons that leaves history with volumes to write and document for the next generations to see.”
