Determined to build on the victory recorded by the Peoples Democratic Party in the recent governorship election in Ekiti State, President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday met with a former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola.
The meeting, held behind closed doors at the State House, was conveyed at the instance of the President, apparently to mend fences with key chieftains of the PDP that could swing the election in favour of the ruling party in the state, the All Progressives Congress.
The governorship election in Osun State is slated for August 9, 2014.
Oyinlola was accompanied to the meeting by the National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu.
The Eagle Online recalls that APC chieftains met with Prince Oyinlola immediately after the Ekiti State election to woo him to back the party’s candidate and incumbent Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.
The APC candidate and incumbent governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, lost the June 21 governorship election to the PDP candidate, Ayodele Fayose.
Fielding questions from State House correspondents after the meeting, Oyinlola said he remains in the PDP as authentic National Secretary of the party.
His words: “All I am telling you is that Oyinlola in the face of the law remains the authentic secretary of the PDP.
“Anybody in that office for now is a pretender.
“I was taken to the Villa by the Chairman of the party and we had some discussions as to how to move the fortunes of the party forward.”
The Eagle Online recalls that the Independent National Electoral Commission recently said it does not recognise Prof. Adewale Oladipo as the PDP National Secretary.
It will also be recalled that Oyinlola was on November 6, 2013 reinstated as the National Secretary of the PDP by the Court of Appeal.
However, the PDP had filed a suit at the Supreme Court to challenge the ruling, praying for Stay of Execution of the Court of Appeal judgement.
The hearing of the suit comes up on July 6, 2014.
