HEDA Resource Centre in collaboration with the Open Government Partnership office and the House of Representatives Committee on Financial Crimes with the support of TrustAfrica are organizing a capacity building workshop for members and staff of the committee on the current, legal and practical issues related to issues of corruption.
The customized workshop aims to improve transparency, accountability, openness and professionalism in issues concerning corruption, particularly in the public sector and the legal arena of the country.
The workshop is to be preceded by a Special Consultative Session of the Committee with Heads of Anti-Corruption Agencies in the Country.
The training/workshop will run concurrently for two days from July 31 to August 1, 2018.
Participants would be drawn from government ministries, departments, CSOs and agencies involved in strategic planning of reforms that strengthen the ability of government to effectively implement public policies and adequate control over public
expenditure.
A statement said HEDA Resource Centre and TrustAfrica found the training necessary because to enable members of the parliament perform strategic leadership roles, enhance their existing skills on strategic function, strategic thinking around the global reforms that can enhance chances of national economic development, life-cycle portfolio development in public sector management, PEST analysis, strategy development and reporting on budgets.
A statement by the organisers said: “Members of Parliament are leaders not only of their constituents, but also of government, and they play a key role in providing strategic leadership to government.”
Objectives of the training include: Identifying old and new forms of corruption and widening the knowledge of participants on the causes and impact of corruption on State’s development; Examining the impact of corruption on economic and political reforms; Facilitating a search for comparative systems and strategies for confronting the challenges of corruption as an obstacle to democracy, economic development and official integrity; Increase the effective participation of stakeholders in the activities of governments’ transparency institutions through accessibility and interaction; Establishing a network for collaboration in the fight against corruption, promoting principles of good governance, advancing the course of democracy, creating a culture of respect for and promotion and protection of human rights and respect for the rule of law; and Introduction to PEST analysis- political, economic, social and technological factors that may impugn or enhance budget implementation.
The statement added: “Conclusively, the project is to trigger a review of pending Anti-Corruption bills before the parliament for passage before the expiration of the 8th Assembly and to enhance the capacity of the parliamentarians to promote the principle of good governance while advancing the course of democracy.
“At the end of the training, it is the hope of the organizers that participants get to see themselves as strategic leaders in government affairs and also as front runners in the reform agenda.”
