The Police Command in Anambra says no fewer than 378 additional personnel have been deployed across the state to ensure maximum security during the “ember” months.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Garba Umar, disclosed this while addressing newsmen in Awka on Wednesday.
Umar said that the additional personnel were deployed in six units of 63 men each, adding that they would complement the existing manpower in the command during the period.
He warned all criminal and misguided elements in Anambra to steer clear the state, adding that there was no hiding place for them.
He said: “Let me state here that we have additional six units of personnel made of 63 men each deployed across Anambra.
“These men will complement the existing ones we have, to ensure that there is peace and security during the ‘ember’ months.”
Umar said the Divisional Police Officers have been given marching orders to arrest all illegal revenue collectors in the state, in line with the ban of the act by Anambra Government.
According to him, 18 of such persons have so far been arrested and called on others indulging the practice to stop forthwith.
He said: “Sequel to the ban on illegal collection of tolls and levies in markets, containers, wheelbarrows, and all forms of extortions, under the pretence of working for government, those that are involved are warned to desist.
“The command under my watch is ready to enforce it to the latter. I have directed my DPOs and other striking units to arrest all miscreants found violating the ban. So far 18 persons have been arrested.”
The CP said the command had reviewed its crime prevention strategy, to contain the wave of cultism, child stealing, armed robbery including “one-chance” scam, kidnapping and murder.
He disclosed that between October and now, no fewer than 100 confessed cultists have been arrested with a good number of them charged to court while others were still under investigation.
Umar announced the arrest of a murder suspect, Chukwuemeka Umeji, a petrol dealer in Nnewi, who allegedly stabbed his elder relation, Chigozie Aghaji, 26, to death.
The commissioner of police said the corpse had been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy while the suspect would be charged to court after investigation.
He said a Toyota Camry car, laptops, International Passports and other valuables, belonging to lecturers at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University were also recovered from armed robbers who raided their homes.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that some recovered items displayed included locally made guns of various types, cartridges, cutlasses, axes, swords, handsets and other accessories.
