After securing Brazilian entry visas at the weekend for the Confederation Cup, most of the home-based stars in the Super Eagles were asking officials one question: when will the remaining money pledged to us by top Nigerian businessmen be redeemed because it is already getting to four months now?
Among the largesse the players are still hoping to get are those of Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, whom many said has been too busy to even remember that he pledged $1 million to the all-conquering Super Eagles after they won the African Cup of Nations.
There is also Alhaji Ishaku Rabiu, who pledged half the amount that Dangote pledged, the same amount Chief Emeka Offor and Senator Ifeanyi Uba pledged to the Nations Cup winners.
The Cross River State Government, which has been behind most of the team’s successes, is also yet to redeem its pledge but officials say they trust the Senator Liyel Imoke-led government, which hosted qualifiers for the team’s games en route South Africa 2013 and have continued to support the Nigeria Football Federation and all that national teams.
One of the players was to say that the redemption of the pledges will go a long way in encouraging the team and its officials in the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers and the Confederation Cup that Brazil is scheduled to host next month.
Already, the team has secured entry visas to the South American country, after earlier securing the ones for the United States of America for the friendly against Mexico and Germany, where the team will camp for the qualifiers against the Kenya Harambee Stars and the Brave Warriors of Namibia.
