England renowned referee, Howard Webb, has been listed among the officials that will officiate at the Confederations Cup slated for Brazil in June.
The controversial referee, among other 12 referees, is most likely to be assigned as the center referee for the Super Eagles group games.
Howard Webb, Darren Cann and Michael Mullarkey, the English trio who oversaw the 2010 World Cup final, are among the officials named for the tournament.
Algeria’s Djamel Haimoudi is the only African referee picked for the tournament while his country man, Abdelhak Etchiali, and Morocco’s Redouane Achik were selected as assistant referees
The tournament will feature the winners of each of FIFA’s regional competitions and hosts, Brazil, as they prepare to stage the 2014 World Cup.
Festivities begin on June 15 in Brasilia, when Luiz Felipe Scolari’s team, who won the 2009 edition of the Confederations Cup in South Africa, faces the reigning AFC Asian Cup champions, Japan.
The Stephen Keshi tutored African champions will slug it out with World champions, Spain, 2011 Copa America champions, Uruguay, and Oceanian football champions, Tahiti, in Group B.
Tahiti are the Super Eagles first opponents on June 17 at the Estádio Mineirão in Belo Horizonte.
Massimo Busacca, head of refereeing for the world football governing body, FIFA, hinted that the referees will get additional help at the tournament with the introduction of goal-line technology.
