The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission has announced October 10, 2018 as new date for the conduct of local government elections in the state.
The PLSIEC Chairman, Fabian Ntung, disclosed this to newsmen on Tuesday shortly after a closed door meeting with heads of political parties at the commission’s Head quarters in Jos.
Since the All Progressives Congress-led government of Governor Simon Bako Lalong came on board in 2015, local government election had not been held due to alleged security threats.
The last date the PLSIEC fixed for the conduct of the election that never saw the light of the day was February 17, 2017.
With this new arrangement, the chairman said four local governments of Jos North, Barking Ladi, Riyom and Jos South would be exempted from participating in the exercise due to the current security situation in the area.
Ntung said he hopes that the election in the local governments exempted would be held soon once there is security clearance.
He mentioned areas where the election will take place in October to include, Bassa Bokkos, Jos East, Kanam, Kanke, Langtang North, Langtang South Mangu, Mikang, Pankshin, Qua-an-pan, Shendam and Wase.
The Commission had earlier cleared 725 Candidates to contest for chairmanship and councillorship seats from different political parties.
