The supporters of the Action Congress of Nigeria and the Labour Party clashed during a public lecture organised to mark the fifth anniversary of the death of Governor Adebayo Adefarati in Akure.
The clash was said to have occurred around noon on Friday after suspected members of the LP stormed the BTO Hall on Oyemekun Road, singing and dancing.
Eyewitness accounts said the supporters of both parties had argued over who should host the event.
Accusing the organisers of turning the lecture into a political rally for the ACN, supporters of the LP argued that since the deceased was a former governor of the state, the event ought to have been organised by the government and not the state branch of the ACN.
Violence had broken out when some members of the LP, who had worked with the late Adefarati as commissioners, special assistants and special advisers were prevented from gaining entry to the venue of the event by some hoodlums.
Two cars belonging to the immediate past Chairman of the LP, Dr. Olaiya Oni, and a member of the House of Representatives representing Akure South and North Federal Constituency, Mr. Ifedayo Abegunde, were allegedly vandalised during the clash.
Although the timely intervention of the police restored normalcy, some of the guests were forced to flee the venue for fear of being hurt.
The Secretary of the ACN in the state, Mr. Adegboyega Adedipe, however, blamed the police and the LP for the clash.
He said the LP supporters did not come to attend the programme, but to disrupt it.
But the Director of Publicity of the LP in the state, Mr. Koye Odogiyan, alleged that thugs hired by the ACN caused the conflict.
He described the late Adefarati and Governor Olusegun Mimiko as having the best of relationships, when the former was alive.
