Wife of the Governor of Ogun State, Olufunso Amosun, has been honoured with an award of excellence as the 2013 Most Performing First Lady in Nigeria by the Association of Nigerian Community in County Clare, Republic of Ireland.
The organisers cited various initiatives embarked on by the wife of the governor, which distinguished her from other wives of the governor.
Speaking while formally presenting the award to Amosun at her office in Abeokuta, the Association’s Financial Secretary, Ayobami Oyedele, described the wife of the governor as an exceptional mother who always wants the best for everyone without any recourse to age, educational background, religious or political affiliations.
Oyedele said: “This award is in recognition of your selfless contributions in assisting the less privileged in Ogun State. You have genuine interest in associating with the down-trodden. You have embarked on various initiatives aimed at uplifting the people of Ogun State. This has indeed distinguished you from other wives of the governor in Nigeria, most especially your Going Green campaign to save the environment from further degradation.
“You have also done wonderfully well in assisting and supporting our elderly people in our society. The UPLIFTing the Aged Welfare ATM Card is one such distinctive step which you have used to help our elderly people.”
Responding, the wife of the governor thanked the organisers of the award, commending them for recognising her contribution in making Ogun State and Nigeria great.
Amosun said: “My ‘Uplift’ programmes are premised on the acronym – Understanding People’s Limiting & Inhibiting Factors Today. With my Uplift Development Foundation we have succeeded in uplifting and empowering many less privileged in Ogun State. All our programmes are aimed at alleviating poverty and alleviate the sufferings of our people by embarking on empowerment initiatives to make our people self-independent.”
The Association of Nigerian Community in County Clare organised the 2013 award ceremony in celebration of Nigeria’s 53rd Independence Day as a way of promoting the heritage of Nigerian and Nigerian Irish alike in order to foster integration.
Other awardees include former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Bashorun Dele Momodu, Prof. Braimoh Bello of University of South Africa and among other notable Nigerians.
