Wife of the Governor of Ogun State, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun, at the weekend called on philanthropists and stakeholders in the education sector to join hands with government to provide community development services to the less privileged to achieve the Millennium Development Goals of reducing poverty by 2015.
Speaking at the commissioning of a modern toilet facility constructed by Day Waterman College and donated to Zion African Primary School, Akia in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, the governor’s wife said it is only through collective efforts that a virile and strong nation can be built.
Mrs. Amosun lauded the college for its various community development projects, saying this would go a long way in improving the lives of the less privileged in the society.
According to her, Day Waterman College’s donation of pipe-borne water to Magbagbe-Odun Village, toilet packs, mosquito treated nets and de-worming tablets to pupils of Zion Primary School showed the college’s commitment at addressing pressing social issues in the community and the state.
“I am highly impressed that a school can take up such a challenge to do a fundraising for the needy and l hope other wealthy schools will emulate this action,” she said.
The Principal, Day Waterman College, Dr. Tassos Anastasiades, noted that the mission of the college was to provide quality and unparalleled educational experience to the students as well as impacting on them positive ways of reaching out to the needy in their community.
He added that the college believes in adding values to the community to better the fortunes of the youths through education, saying the college owed sacred obligation to be sensitive to the needs of the people around them.
The principal said the college is also reaching out to other schools in the areas of construction of new five classrooms, comprising science laboratory, library, staffroom, renovation of old classrooms with iron doors and windows, provision of desks and benches, among others.
