The Ogun State governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, and former President Olusegun Obasanjo have called for enduring unity among the Egbas in order to foster the development of the race and Ogun State in general.
The duo made the call on Saturday at the Government House, Oke Igbein, Abeokuta, the state capital, at the meeting of the Special Committee on the Unity among the four sectional Obas in Egbaland.
Amosun stated that he only created a platform for ventilation of misgivings in order to achieve unity.
He said: “We need unity in order to prosper more.
“Our forebears were very united and they did very well.
“This is the right time to unite in order to nurture development of the race and entire state.”
Amosun recalled that Egba was the cradle of civilisation and many of its people had attained preeminent positions in the country.
“So our unity and speaking with one voice will only impact positively on the race, Ogun and Nigeria,” he said.
Speaking in the same vein, Obasanjo, another prominent Egba son, explained: “Governor Amosun is the guarantor of the peace being achieved today.
“We can’t thank him enough.
“Wherever human beings are, there will be frictions.
“It’s been a tortuous road to today, we can see a divine hand in this.”
The communique read to newsmen at the end of the meeting by Oba Adedotun Gbadebo stated: “After achieving what the Committee regarded as reconciliation on all issues that have been causing rancour and dissatisfaction among the Obas, the Obas thereby agreed to sink all their differences and henceforth work together in harmony.”
The Committee Members are Obasanjo; Chief Earnest Shonekan, former Head of Interim National Government; and Olatunde Abudu, the Maiyegun of Egbaland.
The paramount Egba Monarchs are Alake of Egbaland, Oba Aremu Gbadebo; Osile of Oke Ona, Oba Adedapo Tejuosho; Agura of Gbagura, Oba Halidu Olaloko; and Olowu of Owu, Oba Adegboyega Dosunmu.
The Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Tunde Lemo; and industrialist, Dr. Femi Majekodunmi, attended the parley.
