Shola Ameobi has admitted that a dream meeting with Lionel Messi is driving him on to a strong finish to the season with Newcastle United.
The Toon striker is now joint third in United’s all-time Premier League goalscorer chart with 43 goals alongside Andy Cole, after netting in the 3-0 win over Cardiff City.
Ameobi goes into the encounter at Liverpool on Sunday hoping to add to his two goals scored in the last three matches.
United boss, Alan Pardew, wants to keep Ameobi for next season but must persuade the club owner he is worth a place in his squad.
Ameobi – who picks up around £22,000 per week – might have to consider lower pay.
But his profile could rise over the summer if he performs well with Nigeria.
The Super Eagles are set to face Argentina in the World Cup.
And Ameobi admits he can’t wait for the tournament to start.
He said: “We’re excited to be playing against Messi and Sergio Agüero.
“It’ll be a massive challenge for us but one we will relish.
“We also have Iran and Bosnia and hopefully we can get something.”
Ameobi also admits that there could be plenty of banter between himself and Argentine Fabricio Coloccini before the World Cup kicks off.
He said: “We’ve got Argentina to come.
“And my teammate, Colo, is here and I’m sure we will be having a few words about it before the end of the season!”
