Shola Ameobi has paid tribute to the man who made his World Cup dream come true.
The now former Newcastle United striker described Nigeria’s Stephen Keshi as “one of the best” he had ever worked with.
Ameobi and his international teammates will travel to Brazil later this week.
Sealing a World Cup place is a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for a player who believed he would never get the chance of playing at such a high level.
And Ameobi knows who he has to thank for giving him this wonderful opportunity so late on in his career.
He said: “Even before I made my debut (for Nigeria), I had heard all about him (Keshi).
“He’s a legend and one of the best coaches I have worked with. The coach took a chance on me and I will always be grateful to him.”
Ameobi was released last week, with Hull City a likely destination for him.
