Samson Igbokwe, National President, Senior Staff Union of Universities, has urged union leaders to always engage in dialogue on issues with the management to ensure peace and harmony on campuses.
Igbokwe said this at the inauguration of the new secretariat of the Senior Staff Union of Universities-Lagos State University on Wednesday in Lagos.
He said union leaders should use intellectual minds to resolve issues, adding that war or fist were not the way to solve problems.
He said: “SSANU-LASU occupy vantage position in the national executive council because this chapter has produced vibrant officers over the years.
“Due to the cooperation and unity among members, SSANU-LASU completed this secretariat project without outsider’s assistance.”
Igbokwe urged every member to continue to cooperate and work with the university management to sustain the peace currently enjoyed in LASU under the leadership of Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun.
In his opening remarks, Saheed Oseni, Chairman, SSANU-LASU, called on the university management to continue to support the union.
According to Oseni, LASU staff are very accommodating, reasonable and civil, but never to be taken for granted.
He said: “LASU staff have not been the problem.
“The event of the last four years has proved that we are good people, which means it has always been problem of former leadership.
“Our unsavoury past was because of leadership, but we can see what the current administration is doing.”
Prof. Olumuyiwa Noah, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), urged every union member to give a modicum of respect when discussing the management in public or in private.
Noah said the management would not meddle in the affairs of SSANU because it believed they were reasonable and professional in handling their affairs.
He said: “I pray that you will not allow anyone to come and destroy the work you are doing and we hope that other unions will also take the challenge.”
Funmi Sessi, Lagos State Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress, said the Lagos State Government commenced payment of minimum wage to workers in its parastatals in December.
Sessi said most mainstream state agencies had not been paid because of lots of issues in the accounting process, which had just been resolved.
She said: “Minimum wage will be paid.
“Please let us be patient with the Lagos State Government.
“I commend the SSANU-LASU executives that came after us for continuing and finishing this project, which serves as a good image to all our members.”
