The Niger State Governor, Dr Babangida Aliyu, has said that the ban on commercial motorcycles, popularly called Okada, in Suleja town of the state will arrest insecurity in the state.
Aliyu said this when he received the League of Imam in the state, led by its Chairman, Sheikh Ibrahim Isah Fari, who paid him a thank you visit in Minna.
He said that okada also contributed to the high rate of accident recorded in the state.
The governor, while defending the decision of government to ban commercial motorcycle operation in Minna, said most of the operators were discovered to be foreigners who had no stake in the state.
According to Aliyu: “Suleja Local Government has asked the State Government for a ban to be clamped on the operation of Okada in Suleja town.
“We will give the operators eight weeks from April 29 to find alternative means of livelihood before the ban will take effect.”
Aliyu also directed the Commissioner for Transport, Alhaji Garba Mohammed, to provide 300 tricycles within four weeks to be distributed to those to be disengaged in Suleja town.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation and Chief Imam of Minna Central Mosque, Fari, appealed to the governor for the inclusion of a member of the League in the state Amirul hajj committee, adding that the Federal Government should also be advised to hands off feeding of pilgrims in the Holy land.
