Govermor of Niger State, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, on Thursday threw his weight behind the decision of President Goodluck Jonathan to submit the outcome of the National Conference to the National Assembly.
Governor Aliyu applauded the comments by President Jonathan when he received officials of the Niger State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, led by the Chairman, Reverend Musa Dada, at his residence in Minna.
Jonathan recently set up the Advisory Council on the National Dialogue, headed by Senator Femi Okunronmu, with a declaration that the outcome of the deliberation will be sent to the National Assembly.
According to Aliyu: “The President is right that everything discussed at the forum must go to the National Assembly.
“Sending the report of the dialogue committee to the National assembly will be in line with the prevailing political arrangement in the country where there is presently a sovereignty.
“There cannot be two sovereignties in a country.
“I am of the view that the final document that will emerge from the National and State Assembly after the dialogue will be what we will call a Nigerian constitution made by Nigerians.”
Aliyu insisted that Nigeria will remain as one even after the dialogue but said that the nation will be better strengthened democratically.
The governor promised to continue to give equal treatment to adherents of the two major religions in the state, adding that it is on record that he was the first governor to bring the Christian Association of Nigeria, Northern State before the Northern States Governors Forum to show how religiously unbiased he is.
He charged CAN and its members to continue to pray for the peace of the country and live in harmony with adherents of other religions in the state.
Earlier, Dada had commended Aliyu for the mature way he has handled the affairs of Christians in the state, adding that the governor has not discriminated against Christians in any matter.
