Governors Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa State and Gabriel Suswam of Benue State on Thursday met in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, to resolve the lingering crisis affecting their border communities.
The meeting was attended by traditional rulers, leaders of Fulani and Tiv from the two states.
Addressing newsmen after the meeting, Al-Makura said the meeting was to seek for ways of resolving the incessant crises that had continued to claim lives and property of the people.
“There can be no development in an atmosphere of rancour and hostility, hence the need for the people to live in peace with one another for socio-economic advancement of the state,” he said.
Al-Makura appealed to the aggrieved parties to forgive each other and ensure peaceful coexistence.
He said peace was a veritable tool to national development and urged those in the boarder communities to continue to live in peace.
He called for sharing of intelligence reports between the states to resolve the communal crisis and ensure that the people lived together as one family.
Suswan said they had frank and honest deliberations, regardless of sentiments, noting that it was the only way to resolve crisis.
“We must collectively join hands to find a lasting solution to the crisis and not to apportion blame to any ethnic or religious group,” he said.
