The First Lady, Aisha Buhari, has been slammed by Nigerians for posting the graduation photographs of her daughter-in-law, Zahra Bayero, from a university in the United Kingdom while the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities persists in Nigeria.
Recall that lecturers in Nigerian universities have been on strike since February 14, 2022, with no hope of an end.
Recall also that President Muhammadu Buhari’s son, Yusuf, recently married Zahra, the daughter of the Emir of Bichi in Kano State, Nasiru Ado Bayero.
Taking to her Facebook page on Tuesday, the First Lady announced the graduation of Zahra with First Class Honours in Architectural Science in a university in the United Kingdom.
Aisha Buhari wrote: “Congratulations to Mrs. Zahra B Buhari on your graduation with First Class Honors in Architectural Science.
“Wishing you all the best!”
She accompanied it with photographs.
Her post generated a lot of reactions as her followers described it as insensitive and wicked.
Some were quick to bring up the Academic Staff Union of Universities strike and the fact that Nigerian students have been at home for the past seven months.
Patience Nnedinso Eze wrote: “Congratulations to her but, you should not have shared this on social media… It is insensitive to the plight of many Nigerians who are at home and whose children are currently not in school because of ASUU Strike…”
Kelechi Okoro said: “But the children of Mr Emeka Opeyemi Ahmed have been home for how long again because of ASUU strike. Please rub it in our faces. We are your powder.”
Presidential aspirant for the 2023 election, Omoleye Sowore, wrote: “This is the reason their father Muhammadu Buhari shut down Nigerian public universities for 7 months now and still counting, because his children don’t go to schools in Nigeria and as you could tell they’ve used your resources to give their children the best education money can buy. Nigerians!!! You see why you need a #Revolutionnnow?”
Chiemeka Akwarandu said: “Insensitive personified, Wickedness Engraved Boldly.”
Dimbo Atiya wrote: “This is insensitive because there are millions of other children at home because of your husband’s incompetence. Let’s call a spade a spade.”
Frankline Madichie said: “Your husband has achieved everything failure can offer, name them… The name Buhari will forever be remembered as the worst thing that happened to Nigeria. After destroying Nigerian universities with his leadership incompetence, you sent your children to foreign schools and posting their graduation on social media to mock other peoples children who as a result of ASUU have spent over seven months at home and still counting without lectures, on the day the airport was shut down by the youths for the same reasons. Where is ur conscience? Continue celebrating your daughter’s graduation abroad, nemesis will soon catch up with all of you.”
Rabiu Mubi said: “Congratulations Zahra. You have really done wonderful. To graduate with even 2nd class is not an easy task, not to talk of first class. You are indeed a very hardworking and intelligent?. May God bless your knowledge and the certificate. Pls don’t forget to remain Baba to try and do something positive that can bring an end to the ongoing ASSU strike?.”
Ibraheem Abdullahi Soro wrote: “Congratulations on your graduation from a foreign University. Thanks to your Dad for keeping us at home for over 7months. May he get what he deserved in his life. Allah yamasa Abinda Yamana?”
Fadima Ibrahim said: “Am thoroughly disappointed in you posting this, after knowing full well our students have been at home for months due to your husband’s in competence and nonchalance.”
Emenike Emmanuel said: “Will this stop you all from voting APC in 2023? If you complain here and still go ahead to vote for APC in 2023, you are more insensitive than the person you are accusing of insensitivity. If you are too angry to a fault, vote out the party that kept you at home for 6 months and counting. Don’t just come here to !nsult the first family and do nothing. Even the first family wouldn’t want you to make any mistake in the next general election.”
Oguzor Offia-Nwali JP wrote: “The children like your daughter are at home in the country that your husband is president over ASUU strike, weldone..”
Omowunmi Ogungbaibi wrote: “What school ma? This is an insensitive post, even though I’m an APC member, the student of the country you preside over have been home for over seven months cos of strike, you might as well keep this within your family for now, no mother of Nation should be this insensitive, just yesterday they had a protest blocking Lagos airport road and you post this today, I’m marveled ?”

A.I. Sabo said: “Imagine the masses’ ordeal, while the sons of nobody are in despair for universities’ closure over ASUU strike for more than half a year, here’s the First Lady of Nigeria celebrating her In-Law’s graduation from a university abroad! Nigeria is doomed! May Allah rescue us!”
Joy Egbiri said: “This is the height of insensitivity HE! The Nigerian youths have had 7months of their lives wasted on the alter of ASUU strikes this year alone. And you still rub it in by posting a picture of your daughter graduating from a foreign university. What could be more distasteful than this?”
