The Kwara State Governor, Dr. Abdulfatah Ahmed, has called on governments at all levels to emulate and adopt the ideals of the former Prime Minister of Northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello, which focused on people-oriented governance in order to bridge the gap between the government and the governed.
Governor Ahmed said this in a message to the opening ceremony of a capacity building workshop in emergency trauma/blast care skills for doctors and health workers from the North Central Senatorial District, organized by Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
The governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Isiaka Gold, recalled that Sir Ahmadu Bello, as Prime Minister, championed the cause of the masses and brought succour to them during his life time in order to transform the northern region.
According to Dr. Ahmed, Sir Ahmadu Bello “radiated love and goodwill to all and exhibited understanding, tolerance and support towards fellow human beings.”
He said these are values that politicians of today should embrace.
Ahmed, who noted that the focus of the workshop on health was apt, given the fact that healthcare delivery constitutes the major challenges facing Northern Nigeria, suggested that government in the region should strive for improvement in the areas of advocacy, preventive health care, polio eradication, epidemic and access to affordable quality health care.
A member of the Advisory Council of the Foundation and former Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Ahmadu Coomassie, said the workshop was organised to address some health challenges in the North and promote the well being of the people.
Coomassie added that the foundation has also designed programmes to enhance economic empowerment, education, agriculture, advocacy and research for the promotion of good governance in the region.
