The Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation has constituted an 11-man committee to find solutions to the lack of peace and unity in the northern region.
The Peace and Conflict Resolution Committee is chaired by a former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Mamman Nasir, while Dr. Shetima Aji-Ali will serve as Secretary.
The committee, inaugurated in Kaduna on Thursday, also has former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Salihu Ibrahim (rtd); former Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako; former Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Coommassie; and Ambassador Ibrahim Gambari as members.
Other members include Margaret Icheen, Ambassador Fatima Balla-Sa’ad, Hajiya Laraba Dattijo, Prof. Gidado Tahir and Iliya Danga.
Dr. Babangida Aliyu, the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the foundation, who inaugurated the committee, said they were mandated to develop measures to enhance peace and unity in the region.
Aliyu said that the committee would support the efforts of various levels of government in the region, including the Northern Governors Forum, to build sustainable peace.
According to him, the committee will consult regularly with stakeholders in the North and across the country with regards to the attainment of enduring peace.
Aliyu added that the committee would review, investigate and advice government on possible solutions to violent and non-violent conflicts in hot spot areas and across the region.
He stressed that the committee was mandated to monitor trends for early detection of conflicts, support preventive actions and deploy alternative strategies to resolve any conflict.
Aliyu, a former governor of Niger State, further said that the committee would develop and strengthen the culture of dialogue, respect for dignity, diversity and rights of every Nigerian.
Aliyu said: “The North must find that peace and unity, so that we can concentrate on pursuing the development of our region.
“We must find peace and unity to allow our children to be educated, our agriculture to feed the nation, our solid minerals to be explored, and the political sagacity we were known for, to be re-established.”
