Governor Ibrahim Idris of Kogi State was this evening involved in an auto crash, The Eagle Online has gathered.
Kogi State Government House sources told The Eagle Online that the governor is at the moment undergoing treatment in his official residence in Lokoja, the state capital.
It was learnt that the accident occurred close to the University of Abuja, which is less than one hour drive from the main town of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Idris was on his way back to Lokoja from Abuja.
It was learnt that the Jeep in which he was riding was seriously affected.
He had to be moved into his spare Jeep to get to Lokoja.
Sources told The Eagle Online that rather than return to Abuja for treatment, Idris decided to make the over one hour journey to Lokoja for the treatment by his personal physicians.
It was learnt that Idris decided on this because of the judgment to be delivered by the Supreme Court tomorrow on his tenure as governor.
Idris and four other governors who had to stand for fresh elections after the 2007 gubernatorial election had approached the Supreme Court for the interpretation of when their tenure should commence and end.
Though the Supreme Court ruled that the tenures of the governors should start from when they were sworn-in again, the judges of the apex court nonetheless sought for the opinion of other legal luminaries in the matter.
It is this position that the Supreme Court is to pronounce on tomorrow morning.
Some of the other governors who went to court with Idris were the Bayelsa State Governor, Mr Timi Sylva, and the Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan.
Out of the five governors who went to court then, it was only Idris that was not seeking a fresh mandate.
He is running his second term in office.
Sources linked Idris’s desire to be in Lokoja this night to the Supreme Court judgment tomorrow, fearing that it might not be in the favour of the five governors.
This will mean Idris having to vacate the Government House almost immediately since his tenure, ordinarily, should have ended on May 29, 2011.
He was said to be “rushing to move his things out of the Government House.”
Official confirmation could not be obtained before press time.
