The Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency says it has disbursed over N3.1 million to victims of fire outbreak in Ringim Local Government Area of the state.
Alhaji Sani Yusuf Babura, Executive Secretary of the agency, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria in Dutse on Thursday.
Yusuf said that the amount was disbursed to 106 victims of fire outbreak that occurred in Barebari village of Ringim LGA.
NAN reports that the fire, which happened on April 19, destroyed 60 houses, including animals and food stuff in the village.
He explained that the cash assistance was given to the victims based on the level of damage each recorded.
The executive secretary added that the assistance was provided by the state government to alleviate the suffering of the victims, as well as to enable them rebuild their houses.
He said the exercise is conducted after the agency had conducted an assessment of the level of damage caused by the fire outbreak.
He said: “We disbursed over N3.1 million cash assistance to 106 victims of fire outbreak in Abanderi village of Ringim Local Government Area.
“This is coming after we had earlier given them relief items which include mattresses, blankets, mats, mosquito nets, as well as assorted grains.”
Yusuf, therefore, warned people in the state against careless use of fire, particularly cooking fire.
He said the warning becomes necessary in order to avoid fire disaster, particularly in rural communities, adding that most of the houses in rural areas were thatched and could easily catch fire.
He added: “The cause of the outbreak was from cooking fire. So, housewives must ensure that they quench fire after finishing cooking in the night, in order to avoid future occurrence.”
