A Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State on Tuesday freed a 52-year-old pastor, John Jegun, after spending nine months in prison custody for alleged murder.
Magistrate S.K. Matepo struck out the case following an advice from the Directorate of Pubic Prosecutions that Jegun had no case to answer.
The court consequently discharged and acquitted the suspect of all charges.
Matepo said: “Following the DPP’s advice on the above case, it has been duly established that the defendant has no case to answer.
“He is hereby discharged and acquitted of all the charges and the case is struck out.”
The defendant, who resides at 24, Ajenifuja Street, Bariga, was first arraigned on August 30 for the alleged murder of Sule Age, who visited him for spiritual help.
The prosecutor, Chris Takim, had told the court that the defendant, who claimed to be a pastor, was visited by the deceased in company of his friend, Joseph Ajibola, on August 23, 2012 to seek spiritual help.
He said Jegun gave the deceased a concoction, which he drank.
He said that Age began to bleed profusely from his ear, nose and mouth shortly after leaving Jegun’s residence.
Takim said Age died shortly after and was abandoned in front of a church close to Jegun’s residence where he was discovered by residents of the area.
He said the offence contravened Section 221 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
