Team Nigeria’s hopes of having Blessing Okagbare haul in gold medal in the Women’s 100m event was dashed in Rabat, Morocco on Monday.
Okagbare false started in her semifinal heat, leaving room for Marie-Josee TA Lou from Cote d’Ivoire to outclass the rest of the field in 11.36s.
The Olympic and World championship medalist galloped perfectly in the first and second heat trails of the 100m, but bungled her performance in the semi finals and was thus sent packing from the finals.
Joy Udo Gabriel made up for Okagbare’s disqualification winning her 100m heat with a time of 11.47 to make it to the finals.
However, Team Nigeria still had cause to wave the green white green flag in celebration with her first track and field gold coming minutes later in triple jump.
Grace Anigbata made good her expectations at the ongoing African Games with her scintillating performance that yielded the desired colour of medal for Nigeria.
Anigbata, who holds the title as the 2018 African champion in triple jump, leapt a distance of 13.75m to become the 2019 All Africa Games champion.
New kid on the block, Dotun Ogundeji, also did Team Nigeria proud with his silver medal in the Men’s Discus event.
The 2019 African Games is Ogundeji’s first international outing for Nigeria.
Meanwhile, more medal prospects are in the way of Team Nigeria as the duo of Usheoritse Itsekiri and Raymond Ekevwo comfortably cruised to the finals of the Men’s 100m events heats.
