President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday led top government officials and members of the Diplomatic Corps to honour the nation’s fallen heroes.

The traditional laying of wreath marking the end of activities in the 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day took place at the National Arcade, opposite Eagles Square, Three Arms Zone, Abuja.

As it is the tradition, white pigeons are placed in a cage positioned at the venue of the ceremony and the President will have to set them free, symbolising unity and peace and security in the country.

However, at the event on Friday, the President opened the cage to set the birds free but they refused to fly even after few attempts to get them to fly into the air.

The birds refusal to fly has generated a lot of reactions from Nigerians online.

Here are some Twitter reactions:

@isiomanb: “There’s no peace in Nigeria. There’s no progress being made. And there’s no harmony among us. So the pigeons refused to fly. Unbothered and unhinged, Buhari didn’t hesitate to leave the birds. Like he does with Nigeria and Nigerians. You won’t find a more iconic video.”

@babashola8: “As long as Buhari is the president, the pigeons will never fly. Remember two independence celebrations they conducted and the pigeons never flew? That’s right! They will never fly until this country is reclassified into six countries.”

@glamogen: “The pigeons are not liars! Buhari gave them the same lackadaisical attitude he dishes out to Nigerians.”
