Admission process, strikes responsible for poor varsity rating — NGO

Exam Ethics Marshal International, an NGO, has attributed the poor the rating of tertiary institutions in Nigeria to slow admission processes and incessant strikes, among other factors.
Ike Onyechere, the Chairman of the organisation and National Coordinator, Joint Education Stakeholders Action Coalition, made this assertion at the News Agency of Nigeria Forum on Sunday in Abuja.
Onyechere said: “Let’s take the issue of JAMB; 90 per cent of tertiary institutions in the world, many of them are almost concluding the first semester, some are even going on holiday.
“But in Nigeria, we are still talking about admissions; we grounded our entire tertiary institutions because we are politicking between cut off mark of 180 or 200, and so on.
“A lot of institutions have not opened because they have not gotten the new students due to the confusion in the system.
“Nigeria, I think, is the country that has the highest level of strike in tertiary institutions. So, how can we compete with people?
“An institution is shut down for say a month or two months or even for the whole term.
“The next thing you will hear is that the university is opening on Friday and exam starts on Monday and you ask yourself the question what exam? Who taught the papers? When did they study?
“These things when they are happening they look mundane; they look small but at the end of the day they add up.”
The national coordinator also noted with regret that the quality of some tertiary institution graduates in the country today was worrisome.
Onyechere observed that obtaining academic transcript from Nigerian tertiary institutions was difficult while schools abroad attend to such matters with dispatch.
Onyechere said that excuses should not be made for the poor ratings, rather solutions should be proffered to move the education sector forward.
