The Minister of State for Works, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, and a former Governor of Ekiti State, Chief Niyi Adebayo, have berated members of the Peoples Democratic Party who are trooping to the All Progressives Congress since the declaration of the results of the presidential election won by the party’s candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari.
They described them as “fair weather” politicians.
The duo, who spoke in different interviews with journalists in Ise Ekiti and Iyin Ekiti respectively, said the defectors should have stayed back in the PDP and make it a virile formidable opposition party to the incoming APC-led Federal Government from May 29.
Adeyeye, who said he would remain in the PDP, described the action of the defectors as a “serious concern and worrisome”.
He said: “I advice the PDP members to rebuild the party.
“We need to have a viable opposition.
“I think people should stay in their party and work for the success of their party.
“I am not going to defect.
“I don’t believe APC will do better than PDP.”
Adeyeye said the loss of the PDP at the presidential election should rather afford leaders of the party the opportunity to reform it.
He said: “You need this kind of jolt to look back.
“I know a lot of things are wrong with the PDP, so it is an opportunity to review ourselves and restrategise.
“I can tell you these people (APC) cannot go far.
“I am aware that one of the big shots is already coming back to the PDP.”
Adeyeye said notwithstanding the mass defection of members to the APC, the PDP will give virile opposition to the incoming APC-led Federal Government.
He added: “But the real opposition that will be offered is not from the PDP but Nigerians having been able to experience the government.
“Nigerians should not fear that there won’t be a virile opposition.”
Adebayo said the defectors should have stayed in the PDP to build it.
He said a virile and viable opposition party is needed to keep the ruling party on its toes.
