Ademola Lookman fires Atalanta to Serie A top spot

Nigeria international, Ademola Lookman, ensured Atalanta’s 2-1 comeback win against Sassuolo in a Serie A tie on Saturday.

Sassuolo had taken the lead with a stunning Giorgos Kyriakopoulos volley, but Atalanta turned it all around.

It did through Mario Pasalic and Lookman.

Pasalic carved the Sassuolo defence open thanks to a quick give-and-go with Lookman, but Andrea Consigli rushed out to parry.

Lookman had penalty appeals, but while Davide Frattesi did catch him, there was minimal contact.

Barely 20 seconds after the restart, Atalanta had turned it around.

Brandon Soppy was involved again, making an immediate slide-rule forward pass, where Lookman shrugged off Martin Erlic and curled left-footed into the far top corner.

In a post match interview, the Nigeria admitted that he’s relishing his experience with Atalanta and Serie A.

“It was another tough match against another tough opponent, we’re glad to get the three points. The boys dug in deep and it was a resilient performance,” Lookman told Sky Sport Italia.

Atalanta are temporarily top of the table on 24 points, their best ever start to a Serie A campaign. Can they be Scudetto contenders?

“Obviously that’s a long way away. Like I said before, we take it game by game, we’ve been doing that and getting results. We’re just happy to be top of the table for now and then we’ll see how time goes.”

This has been Lookman’s best ever start to a season, a real revelation since his €9m transfer from RB Leipzig, although he was on loan at Leicester City last term.

“I am very happy to be here, I feel very settled in the squad and the city. I am enjoying my football. Long may it continue!”

Lookman will turn 25 on October 20.
