Thugs on Sunday attacked the Collation Centre of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Adamawa State.

Before the thugs struck, the electoral umpire had announced results from 18 Local Government Areas of the state.

The pronouncement of the Returning Officer of the poll, Prof. Mohammed Mele, that the collation would be adjourned triggered the attack by the thugs who were already close by.

From the collation centre in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, the thugs were reported to have hit the streets, damaging vehicles, buildings and other valuables in sight.

However, some of them waited behind to prevent those at the collation centre from leaving.

Reports had it that only Service Commanders of the various armed security agencies were able to leave, with journalists and observers attacked.

The vehicle of a journalist with Channels TV was reported to have been damaged.

But before chaos broke out, the incumbent and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ahmadu Fintiri, was in the lead.

Following closely was the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Aisha Ahmad, popularly known as Binani.

While Fintiri took 11 of the 18 local government areas so far announced with 346,109 votes, Ahmad had 328,870 votes in the kitty and won the remaining seven LGAs.

Three local governments are outstanding.

These are Fufore, Michika and Song.

There was dispute over the results from Fufore, which led to the decision of the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu Yunusa-Ari, to issue a form to recompile the results from the LGA.

The collation will continue at 12noon on Monday.
