Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of an Ikeja High Court, on Monday, adjourned until February 7, an alleged murder case against a 24-year old woman Blessing Edet.
Edet is standing trial for allegedly killing her 33-year old fiancé Edet Ebong, during an argument over engagement ring.
The defendant, who resides at No. 1, Falana Street, Ogombo, Lekki, Lagos has, however, denied committing the alleged murder.
The prosecution had alleged that the defendant committed the offence at about 12.15 a.m. on August 18, 2015, at the residence she shared with the deceased.
He said: “Both defendant and the deceased were living together as lovers; Ebong had proposed to marry Edet and had given her an engagement ring as proof of his love and commitment.
“At about 11 p.m. on August 17, 2015, the deceased returned home from work and asked the defendant to prepare a meal for him.
“While she was preparing the meal, Ebong noticed that Edet was not wearing her engagement ring and he queried her about it; an argument ensued which degenerated into a physical fight.
“During the scuffle, Edet stabbed her fiancé in the abdomen with a kitchen knife leading to his death.”
The prosecution said the offence contravened Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.
At the resumed hearing on Monday, Prosecuting counsel, O. A Bajulaiye-Bishi, urged the court to grant her request for an adjournment following the absence of the defence counsel.
Bajulaiye-Bishi told the court that the defence counsel, who was to open his case on Monday, was indisposed and had sent in a letter requesting for an adjournment.
She said: “My Lord, the defence counsel sent someone to inform us that he would not be able to open his defence today because of ill health.”
Taiwo then adjourned the case until February 7 for opening of defence.
