Nigeria Tuesday won two gold and a silver in powerlifting event to boost her medals haul at the ongoing African Games in Congo Brazzaville.
Yakubu Adesokan, competing in 49kg category, set the ball rolling when he lifted 182.5kg to set a new world record and claim the gold. He claimed the gold in his third attempt while an Algerian powerlifter won silver.
Latifat Tijani also gave Nigeria gold after lifting 98kg in the 45kg category while Ben Isimi won silver in the 41kg with a lift of 90kg to finish second behind an Egyptian powerlifter that lifted 92kg to win the gold.
Adesokan told Daily Sunsports that hard work and determination propelled him to win the gold medal, stressing that his next target is to win gold at the 2916 Olympics in Rio, Brazil.
“I worked very hard for the gold medal. Besides, I remained focus medal through my period of training for the African Games. I’m hapoy that my effort was not in vain,” Adesokan said.
His coach, Feyisetan Are, equally expressed joy at the achievement if his athlete which he attributed to hard work and focus on the part if the athlete.
“I’m really excited about the achievement of Adesokan. We worked hard for the gold and I want to commend his determination and self confidence. He’s an athlete that believes in himself,” Are added.
