The Niger State Scholarship Board under the supervision of the state Ministry of Tertiary Education has concluded arrangements to screen 7,650 students who applied for the 2012/2013 bursary.
The Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Dr. Mohammed Bashir Nuhu, who disclosed this to journalists in his office on Monday, said the screening was the first of its kind since in the inception of the Board.
Nuhu described the exercise as a symbolic screening of students, adding that the representatives of the three geopolitical zones in the state will witness the screening of 7,650 students expected to be screened before the end of the year.
He said that it was a period of revolution and transformation, hence the need to open up all the transactions of the ministry, be accountable to the people and to key into the vision of the state.
Nuhu stated that the ministry needed to showcase what it had in store for Nigerlites, particularly the students, to ensure that they were well-mentored.
He said: “We intend to make scholarship serve as a platform to encourage our students to learn.
“Any system that is transparent and accountable would save a lot and more funds would be put into the system for the benefit of the students, to integrate the component of e-library attached to the new bursary card.
“Anyone who had the new bursary card would have access to online resources for the betterment of his research and academic work, saying that this was another component of the scholarship.”
The commissioner urged the students to be serious and dedicated to their studies and to reciprocate the gesture of the state government by being well behaved, as well as to have good values and ethics in whatever they do.
He said the present administration in the state is student friendly and that it would not do anything that would be inimical to them, adding that all they were doing was to ensure that the students were morally and academically sound.
Earlier, the Secretary of the Board, Mallam Danazumi Musa, said the bursary allowance was meant to encourage the students to learn and they needed full information about the applicants to be able to produce the card, adding that as soon as one was screened, the card, already loaded with cash, would be made available to him without any delay.
He revealed that the scholarship board was witnessing some transformations, saying that the bursary allowance commenced with a table payment and then e-payment and with the initiative of the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, the card system is now on board.
