As more Nigerians mourn the Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan player, Izu Joseph, the club says it will be actively involved in his burial.
The club’s Media Officer, Jubril Arowolo, who told the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Lagos that his death was painful, however, did not disclose what the club intended to do.
Arowolo told NAN on the telephone that the untimely death of the reliable defender would create a vacuum in the club.
The versatile defender was killed on Sunday in his hometown of Okaki, southern Bayelsa State, by a stray bullet allegedly fired by a member of the Joint Taskforce battling militants.
Joseph was on holiday from the just-concluded Nigeria Professional Football League in his hometown in the oil rich community before the ugly incident.
Lamenting the loss of the energetic defender, Arowolo, said that his death came at a time the club needed him most.
Arowolo said: “He was a powerful defender whose contributions to the club are immeasurable. He has been with us for the past three years when he joined us from Bayelsa United.
“He even scored some vital goals for us and his exhilarating displays ensured our escape from relegation; he has good understanding among his teammates.
“As I have said, he was a dedicated player and we are going to miss him a lot, sometime ago, he won the Man-of-the-Match award in one of our games.
“This clearly shows his importance to the club in general. His death has dealt a big blow to us but what can we do about it?”
Arowolo prayed God to give the Joseph family the fortitude to bear the loss.
