The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria on Tuesday inducted 333 fresh graduates into its fold.
The figure, according to the Registrar of the Council, Dr. Abdulmumini Ibrahim, is the highest the Council ever produced since the inception of the assessment examination about three decades ago.
The breakdown shows that 317 are foreign trained while 16 are graduates of Igbenedion University.
Dr. Ibrahim called on parents and prospective candidates to always find out about the accreditation status of the institutions they are applying to.
He said: “A total of 473 medical candidates and six dental candidates registered for the October 2013 Assessment Examination that took place in Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
“This is the highest number ever recorded for the Assessment Examination since its inception.”
The Registrar also attributed the increase in foreign trained doctors to inadequate space in Nigeria’s institutions and also failure of most institutions to meet the requirements of the council.
Ibrahim said: “Increase in the number of Nigerians who study Medicine or Dentistry abroad is probably occasioned by insufficient space in Nigerian Universities to accommodate the number of qualified candidates seeking admission.
“Failure of some Medical/Dental schools to meet the minimum requirements of the Council is resulting in withdrawal of accreditation.”
