No fewer than 230 lives were lost in road accidents in Nasarawa State between January 2013 and January 15, 2014, the Federal Road Safety Commission has announced.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC in the state, Francis Udoma, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lafia on Friday that the deaths were recorded in 85 crashes that occurred in the state within the period.
Udoma described 74 of the accidents as serious while 11 were minor, noting that in all the incidents, 2,461 injuries of various degree were recorded.
He attributed the accidents to reckless driving, calling on motorists to respect traffic rules and the rights of other road users.
“Driving is a noble profession and as such, people should go to the driving school and learn how to drive,” he advised.
Udoma urged the Nasarawa State Government to establish driving schools where government drivers and other individuals would be trained.
According to him, the measure will reduce the number of accidents on highways.
He advised motorists to ensure that their vehicles were registered.
The sector commander noted that motorists, especially commercial motorcycle operators in the state, had been found to be using their vehicles for criminal activities.
He said that the command had taken measures, including deploying more officers on road patrols, to reduce the carnage on the highways.
Udoma said that the command had also commenced enlightenment programmes for road users.
