A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress and former governorship candidate of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change in Borno State, Arc. Waziri Bulama, has dissociated the Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Zulum, from any presidential ambition.
According to Bulama, who was the Deputy Director General (Coordination) of the APC Presidential Campaign Council in 2019, the Borno State Governor is focused on delivering dividends of democracy to the people of Borno State in a secured atmosphere.
He also said Zulum is a party man who respects the vision of President Muhammadu Buhari and Party decisions, which include zoning.
He expressed regrets that at a time APC should be talking and working on how to deliver more to Nigerians on their electoral promises, the issue of 2023 has taken the centre stage of political discourse.
Reacting to the several insinuations of Zulum contesting the 2023 presidential election, Bulama said: “Well, the issue of 2023 unfortunately has frantically gained centre stage in National discourse.
“And unfortunately it is at a time when we are supposed to offer governance and solving the problems of Nigerians who voted overwhelmingly, giving us mandate to manage the country less than two years ago.
“The governor of Borno State’s leadership is being admired by many, not only in Borno State but across the country because he is focused, he is a person who goes out to tackle problems that affects the ordinary person – whether it is security, education, health or poverty.
“He faces these squarely and people admire his brisk leadership style.
“But as for issues of partisanship, there is no plan beyond what he is doing.
“In other words, I am saying that there is nothing political about what he is doing.
“I have had engagements and discussions with him many times and the governor sees himself as somebody who has been elected to work to solve problems and he has been working to solve all those problems seriously.
“So, he has never contemplated or even discussed anything with anybody on anything partisanship or his interest beyond his present position or any future ambition or so.
“Basically he is a focused leader and he is working to solve his people’s problems.”
On the insinuations of Zulum running as Vice President in 2023, Bulama said: “For now, this is not even within the realm of conversation facing Gov. Zulum.
“You know he respects the President so much and he is committed to carrying out the wishes of President Muhammadu Buhari on issues relating to politics, issues relating to governance and issues relating to the future of Nigeria.
“He is committed also on complying and working with the party to reorganize it, to make the party stronger and consolidate on gains achieved so far.
“Another thing that l know that Governor Zulum is committed to is his loyalty to senior leaders of our party in Borno State – Sen. Kashim Shettima, other Senators and other National leaders from Borno State.
“He is working with all of them as a team because he is a team player.
“He respects political leaders who are senior to him in our state, in our zone as well as in the country.
“ The governor is actually a very conscientious person, who does not accept being drawn into partisan issues.
“In fact, he skips unnecessary request for awards and honours including request for partisan visits.
“He often does not attend purely partisan meetings, ceremonies so as to remain focused on governance issues.
“I am sure he will avoid anything relating to a long term decisions on partisan issues.
“He is focused on good governance.
“On party politics, he respects the President, the APC leadership and other senior stakeholders.”
It would be recalled that the Borno State Governor had recently given his nod to APC presidential ticket being zoned to the South.
