Former Ghanaian President, John Kufuor, has urged Nigerians to vote in accordance with the constitution to choose their leaders in the 2019 general election.
Kufuor made the comment while speaking with newsmen on Tuesday shortly after being conferred with an Honorary Doctor of Public Administration by the Kwara State University in Ilorin.
He said Nigeria was the most populous country in Africa, so its actions and inaction reflect on the continent.
He said: “Nigeria is the most populous country on the continent, whatever you do here reflects on the continent of Africa.
“So, I want to advise Nigerians to exercise their right of choice in accordance with the federal constitution to give them the sort of leader they deserve.
“Once they have gotten such a leader, they should ensure that the checks and balances system of government in the federal system is respected by the government.
“And the media should be watch dogs when things are not going straight or going awry, it should be for you to point things out as outlined by law.”
The former president said democracy had come to stay in the continent.
Kufour said: “Democracy must stay in Africa because power of the government is from the individuals and without democracy in terms of government of the people, how does the citizens participate?
“So, we must accept it to have come to stay, without it, we will continue to suffer in the hands of the so called strong men without any justification. So it must come to stay.”
