Chief Victor Umeh, the National Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance, on Friday emerged the party’s candidate for Anambra Central Senatorial District in the upcoming 2015 elections.
Umeh, who was the party’s sole aspirant, was screened by a three-member panel, led by Alhaji Tayo Sowunmi, the National Vice-Chairman (South-West) of the party.
The other members of the panel were the National Vice-Chairman (North-East), Alhaji Abubakar Adamu, and the National Legal Adviser, Ifeanyi Mbaeri.
Umeh said he wanted to replace Senator Chris Ngige of the All Progressives Congress in the Senate to provide qualitative representation for the people of his district.
He said: “I want to go to the Senate to give APGA victory for the first time in our senatorial elections.
“I consider it as a challenge.
“APGA has been doing well in the past nine years.
“The party has a very bright future.”
Umeh told the panel that he had been endorsed by his people to run for the seat, adding that the party was working with Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State to win the state’s three senatorial seats.
He called on the government to fund political parties.
He said: “I canvas that government should appropriate money for political parties.
“Even representatives elected on the platform of political parties should contribute to the running of their parties.
“It is an aberration that government has not been funding parties.”
