The national senior women basketball team on Friday in Maputo started their campaign at the 2013 Women African Basketball Championship in Mozambique on a losing note.
The team, known as D’Tigress, lost 46-60 to defending champions, Angola, in their first Group B game at the competition.
The 2013 Women Afrobasket had begun on Friday with 12 teams and it is billed to end on September 29.
The Nigerian side are billed to face Mali, Cameroon, Kenya and Cape Verde in their other Group B matches.
The two-time Women Afrobasket winners had departed for the most prestigious women basketball tournament on the continent on September 18 with a contingent of 22.
The group consists of 12 players captained by Helen Ogunjimi, four coaches led by Scott Nnaji and two medical personnel.
Meanwhile, D’Tigress will play their second first round group match on Saturday against Kenya, who had on Friday lost 39-61 to Cameroon.
In the other Group B matches played on Friday, Mali beat Cape Verde 73-62, while Senegal thrashed Egypt 100-69 in a Group A fixture.
