A total of 176 drivers were convicted by four mobile courts in Rivers State.
Thirteen were discharged and acquitted.
Presiding Magistrate Kilsi Giadom, in Port Harcourt, convicted 60 out of the 64 drivers arraigned before him and discharged and acquitted four while Magistrate Ogeh Elkanah, at Isiokpo, found guilty and convicted 39 out of the 40 drivers prosecuted before him.
Similarly, Senior Magistrate Collins Ali, at the Mobile Court in Eleme, convicted 42 drivers and discharged and acquitted one.
In Ahoda, Chief Magistrate Sir Sokari Dappa Andrew-Jaja, the presiding Magistrate, convicted 35 drivers while seven were discharged and acquitted.
The convicted drivers were sentenced to jail terms of between one and six months.
They were however given options of fines ranging between N1,000 and N30,000, depending on the nature and number of offences committed.
Some of the offences committed were overloading, seat belt violations, driving under the influence of alcohol, speed violation, operating mechanically defective vehicles and use of phones while driving.
The Rivers State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Dr. Kayode Olagunju, disclosed that mobile courts will be regular features in the state as part of the strategy to sanitize the road transportation mode and ensure safe movements.
Olagunju enjoined motorists to obey traffic rules and regulations, reminding them that only the lucky traffic law violators are apprehended by law enforcers as many others are arrested by road crashes.
He promised to continue to combine both education and enlightenment strategies.
He also informed the people of the state that the command had conducted road auditing in the state to bring to the attention of all relevant authorities to the conditions of the roads for necessary remedial actions to be taken.
