No fewer than 16 persons have been confirmed dead in multiple suicide bombs attacks in Borno State between Sunday night and Monday morning.
The attacks began at about 10:21pm on Sunday at the University of Maiduguri, which is located in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
According to a statement by the Borno State Commissioner of Police, Damian Chukwu, on Monday, a male suicide bomber gained entry into the premises of University of Maiduguri and detonated an Improvised Explosive Device on his body near the Rapid Response Services Office building.
The suicide bomber died, while three university security personnel on duty were injured.
One of the injured security personnel, a female, whose identity was given as Becky Edubi, later died while being attended to at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
In another attack at about 10:30pm, four female suicide bombers infiltrated Zannari community in Gwange general area of Jere Local Government Area.
Two of the suicide bombers detonated the IEDs on their bodies in two residential buildings.
The bombers died alongside eight persons, while 11 others were injured.
The third bomber detonated his IED, killing himself alone.
The fourth female suicide bomber, whose identity was not known, was arrested.
But she was said to have died the same night as a result of injuries she sustained.
On Monday, at about 4:08am, two female suicide bombers detonated IEDs on their bodies within the premises of the University of Maiduguri.
One detonated the IED close to the Entrepreneurship and Skill Acquisition Centre Complex, killing herself with no other casualty.
The other suicide bomber detonated behind the Works Department complex, also killing herself with no other casualty.
Chukwu said operatives of the Explosives Ordinance Department and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad were mobilised to the scenes.
He said the dead and injured were evacuated to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
He said the EOD sanitised and rendered the various scenes and their neighbourhoods safe and that normalcy had been restored.
Chukwu added: “In all, 16 persons including the suicide bombers died in the multiple explosions while 13 persons were injured.”
