The Federal Road Safety Commission in Plateau State said over 143 deaths were recorded from road mishaps in the state between January and march 2014.
The Zonal Commanding Officer of the FRSC in the state, ACM Yakubu O. Attah, disclosed this when he paid a courtesy visit to the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists, Plateau State chapter, at the NUJ conference hall in Jos.
Attah said the visit was to establish a cordial relationship with women journalists in the state and together create awareness on the use of seat belts.
Shedding more light on the importance of seat belts, he stressed that parents should also avoid having children below the age of 17 on the front seat of the car and to always use seat belts as often as possible in order to reduce the rate of casualties when it comes to road crashes.
In his words: “Within a week, 20 persons died through road crashes.
“And in January, 55 persons were killed from road crashes; in February, about 41 persons killed; while in March, 47 persons, making the total of 143 persons killed from January to March 2014 on road traffic crashes in the zone.”
Attah also discouraged the consumption of alcohol while driving.
He said this was one of the major causes of road accident.s
The commander also showed his willingness to partner with NAWOJ in the area of workshop and child safety.
The state chairperson of NAWOJ, Jennifer Yarima, expressed delight at the willingness of the Federal Road Safety Commission to associate and partner with women journalists in the state
Yarima expressed sadness over the attitude of some road users who drink and drive and further said the association was willing to work with the commission on such issues.
She said: “The consumption of alcohol has become a thing of concern in the society and we women will play a vital role in fighting the consumption of alcohol.”
Yarima also brought to the notice of Attah the attitude of some men of the commission to members of the general public on the road.
