The Federal Government has been called upon to make best use of monies recovered from some fraudulent, heartless, greedy and selfish Nigerians to better the living standard of the workers in the country.
The Chairman of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, Plateau State chapter, Comrade Dinatu Asibi Assani, made this call Monday at the 2017 May Day celebration held at the Rwam Pam Township Stadium, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
According to Assani, the general decline in economic activities in Nigeria has affected all segments of the economy, but the worst hit are the Nigerian workers.
She said: “Sometimes one wonders if the issue of recession was not caused deliberately by some unscrupulous Nigerians who stole our taxes that are removed directly from source without consultations, change them into dollars and hide in houses, cemeteries and sock-away with air conditions, while Nigerian citizens, especially workers, are left to go through excruciating pains of poverty caused by non payments of stipends called salary.
She commended the Plateau State Government for taking the bull by the horns to pay all the outstanding claims and salary arrears owed civil servants and pensioners to date.
Assani stressed the need for the Federal Government to ensure that monies recovered from these fraudulent, heartless and selfish Nigerians are used to better the life of hard working, committed, selfless and patient Nigerian workers.
Also speaking, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Jubrin Bancir, commended the state Governor, Simon Lalong, for exhibiting workers’ friendly relationship, urging him to remain committed and diligent, transparent and God fearing in his dealing.
Bancir said the theme of the 2017 Workers’ Day: “Labour Relationship in Economic recession: An Appraisal,” is apt, stressing that it provides platform for individual worker engage in serious discuss towards appreciating the depth of the challenge before him at moments like this.
He appealed for the urgent implementation of minimum wage of local government and primary school teachers and timely release of promotion and payment of promotion arrears to all workers in the state among other demands.
He appealed to workers to rededicate themselves towards service delivery as a mark of complementing government’s efforts towards ensuring that the plight of workers is given adequate attention.
Lalong promised to strengthen government-workers relationship to ensure better services for the state, promising to continue dialogue with labour leaders to resolve all pending issues.
