The Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, Taiwo Lakanu, has said that the command was working on certain “clues” that will assist the police to unravel brains behind the Monday’s bank robbery at the branch of First Bank Nigeria in Ikere Ekiti.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the command, Victor Babayemi, confirmed that four persons – two police officers, a corps member and another – lost their lives during the operation, which took place around 4.30pm on Tuesday.
Speaking with journalists in Ado Ekiti on Thursday after attending the launch of a book titled: “Scaling Accidents of Life Plus Political Gladiators of My Life,” written by a senior citizen of Ekiti State, Chief Deji Fasuan, Lakanu said with the clues being worked on, “such a thing would never happen in Ekiti again”.
Lakanu said: “We are working on those clues and very soon such a thing would never happen again.
“Our men are out.
“They have been going round the town.
“We are ready to confront them and we are working round the clock.”
The police boss attributed the current rate of armed robbery in banks to the Yuletide season, adding: “But our men are on ground.
“Not that we did not prepare, we actually prepared, but it is always like that during this season.”
Lakanu recalled that for the past five years, the target of the robbers had been First Bank of Nigeria Plc.
He said this was worrisome and the police has begun investigation into the development.
He said: “We are not ruling out internal connivance, which we are looking at very seriously.
“But we are not focusing on First Bank alone.
“We are focusing on other banks as well.”
