Determined to wage the war against the dreaded cancer disease, the Wife of the Governor of Ogun State and President of the UPLIFT Development Foundation, Olufunso Amosun, has donated three ultra-modern UPLIFT Development Foundation Cancer Screening Centres in Abeokuta, Sagamu and Ota.
The centres, which are located at the State Hospital, Ijaye in Abeokuta; Onabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu; and State Hospital in Ota, were strategically situated for the use of the residents of Ogun State in its three Senatorial Districts of Ogun East (Sagamu), Ogun West (Ota) and Ogun Central (Abeokuta).
All the UPLIFT Development Foundation Cancer Screening Centres can carry out clinical breast examination by medical experts, while vaccines for the prevention of human papilloma virus, which causes cervical cancer and other infections, can be made available in these facilities based on demands.
The centres also have capacity to carry out Visual Inspection with Ascetic Acid, with the aid of video colposcopes in which patient and doctor can have a better view on the screen display.
All the facilities are hospital-based and patients with complex breast/cervical or other women related cancers can be referred to appropriate specialist in the facility.
The UPLIFT Development Foundation Cancer Screening Centre in Sagamu is, however, more equipped to provide extra services (see and treat).
It has ultrasound machine, which can be used for breast scan for those lumps that cannot be accessed clinically.
Besides, scanning of other parts of the body can be done in Sagamu to aid early detection of lesions.
The centre also has facilities to perform cryotherapy for treatment of early cervical cancer lesions in order to halt the progression of the cervical cancer.
The Sagamu centre also has facilities for vaccination and chemotherapy.
In addition to consultation and counselling of patients, all centres have facilities for routine family planning procedures.
Speaking at the weekend’s commissioning of the centres in Sagamu and Ota, Mrs. Amosun said the centres were conceived to enable women have daily access to cancer screening and treatment rather than having to wait for once-in-a-year free cancer screening exercise, which she usually organises for residents of the State every October.
“We need to take action against cancer because early detection is the only means of preventing and reducing the scourge of cancer in our society,” she said.
Responding, the Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye, described the establishment of the UPLIFT Development Foundation Cancer Screening Centres as a milestone in making cancer screening facilities available for the benefits of everyone in the State.
Ipaye commended the wife of the governor for giving women the opportunity to have all-year round breast and cervical screening exercise, particularly those that cannot afford to pay for the screening and treatment, noting that this would further help to avert death and save lives.
The commissioning of the centres was witnessed by medical practitioners, development partners, traditional rulers, market men and women amongst others.
