The University of Ibadan branch of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities has called for the scraping of Joint Admission and Matriculation Board and the re-introduction of the University Admission System.
The union also called for the immediate removal of the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, in the interest of university education system in Nigeria.
Wale Akinremi, the Chairman of the association, made the call in an interview with newsmen in Ibadan on Wednesday.
Akinremu said the congress of the union had agreed that JAMB had outlived its relevance and usefulness, adding that the body had tormented Nigerians a lot.
The News Agency of Nigerian recalls that the Federal Government on Tuesday overruled JAMB on its new admission policy that generated controversy in the recent time.
Akinremi, who spoke on behalf of the union, said Nigerian universities should be allowed to conduct matriculation examination for their prospective applicants or otherwise allow the universities to organise regional examinations.
He condemned the overcentralisation of examinations in the country, saying that he got admission twice at the University of London without any examination.
The union chairman said a research had revealed that Nigerian universities were not accessing foreign students because of JAMB.
Akinremi said the advent of post-UTME organised by universities for its prospective applicants was as a result of the lack of confidence in JAMB and its results.
He said: “So many people abroad want their children to come to Nigeria for their university education but JAMB has inflicted serious torture on our children who are seeking admission into universities.
“What performance do you expect from a brilliant applicant, who had been tormented, traumatised and subjected to vigorous exercise before writing the examination?”
Akinremi described Ojerinde’s recent defence on the distribution of students to various schools out of their choice as “baseless and uncalled for”.
According to him, the students and their parents will not be able to afford the exorbitant fees of private universities.
“We will no more tolerate the unnecessary torture and vigorous exercise,” he said.
