The United Nations Population Fund in collaboration with UNICEF is to launch a joint programme on Female Genital Mutilation and Cutting to accelerate policy and action to abandon the practice.
A statement signed by the Country representative of UNFPA, Ratidzai Ndhlovu, announced the plan on Monday.
The joint programme, according to the statement, is in collaboration among UNFPA, UNICEF, Federal Ministry of Health, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development as well as the Guardian, UK.
It said it would be held at the Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja, adding that the wife of the President, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, would be the special guest of honour.
The statement said wives of governors of Oyo, Osun, Lagos, Ekiti and Ebonyi States would also be in attendance.
It said the launch would be followed by a Pan African media award on FGM and Cutting Reportage.
According to the statement, joint FGM/C programme is part of the UNFPA programme in Nigeria, which aims at accelerating universal access to reproductive health and services.
It said: “The partnership was aimed at improving the sexual and reproductive health rights, reduce maternal mortality and address gender issues.
“It also aimed at accelerating the implementation of the platform for Action of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and ICPD beyond 2014 follow up.”
