Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State at the weekend commissioned the Uvwie Modern Market, Ugbolokposo in Uvwie Local Government Area, Delta State.
The market has approximately 1000 shops along with banking halls, warehouses, police post, and restaurants, among others.
While commissioning the market, Uduaghan said it will decongest the Warri-Effurun metropolis and free it from choking strain of city life imposed by arbitrary erection of shops and trading points.
Represented by his deputy, Professor Amos Utuama, SAN, the governor said it became necessary for the state to work out a joint venture to facilitate the execution of the market.
He said: “We are aware that market development is a responsibility of the third tier of government, but the scope of this market is beyond the capacity of any of our local government councils. Accordingly, it became necessary to work-out a co-operation arrangement with Uvwie Local Government Council to facilitate the execution of the market as a joint venture between the state government and the council.”
He said that being a key member of the administration of Chief James Ibori, who initiated the project, he had been attuned with the vision that inspired it and a host of other projects.
The governor noted that as part of strategy of Delta Beyond Oil recognised that through the ages, trading and farming have remained the mainstay of the people and for which they are well known.
He urged the people to observe and maintain practices that will lead to very clean surroundings, noting that this will check the prevalence of harmful pest and other physical hazards, including fire incidents.
